"GOLDEN GAITS GARDEN"

WELLINGTON, COLORADO

We began our garden and duck-raising experiences at our first home together in Wellington, CO. We were married in 2008 and the garden began in 2009. Our first ducks arrived in 2011.

At that time our garden and duck experiences were outlined in our blogspot blog, Golden Gaits Garden. That blog has been discontinued and the posts regarding the garden are now archived here. The information regarding ducks can be accessed in our Ducks pages.

Note: Some (or all?) photos may be missing, or photo placement may be strange due to the import process. I’m working on that.

Updates: Seedlings, Ducks, Grass, Rain

Seedlings: The indoor seedlings are doing well!  This week I transplanted all the peppers and tomatoes from the MINI blocks into their MAXI blocks, and they’re taking off.  A few more seeds were sown for basil & other herbs and some marigolds.  The beets I’d started were transplanted to the

First Harvest

April 20 We’ve harvested our first lettuce, spinach and cilantro of the year!  The photo at the right shows the cold frame now.  HERE IS A PHOTO that was taken the day I planted, 3/19.  We’ve got puh-lenty of lettuce and spinach, and had our first spinach souffle!  I need

Pathways & Weed Control

This weekend we finished covering most of our pathways between beds with woodchips.  Last year Tim had found (at a local recycle place) some plastic stuff that’s meant to go under cement.  He cut it into widths the size of the walkways and put it down to act as a

Indoor Forest

Here’s a couple of photos of our indoor forest, growing in their MAXI blocks.  The tomato plants are growing like crazy, and I have to lift the lights a notch higher every day or two.  I’m thinking that next year I won’t plant them quite as early, and may hold

Progress, Seedlings, Fertilizer

There is progress being made, and we’re in the final countdown in the last two weeks until “last frost”.  I’ve sown seeds for beets, rutabagas, peas and planted my seed potatoes.   I started my corn seeds indoors, as I did last year.  It worked well last year starting them in

Frustrations of Planting Outside

All year I have planned on planting my seedlings outside this week.  After all,  even though the “average last frost date” is May 15th, the last two years have had great weather in May and I guess I was fortunate.  NOT THIS YEAR.  As mentioned in the last post, I went ahead

Planting Season

Well, it’s been a difficult planting season!  After all my planning, it seemed like everything went kaput the last few weeks.  The week I’d intended to plant (starting May 15, our “average last frost date”) turned cold and rainy.  I knew that there was questionable weather coming, but due to

The Garden Groweth

With all this emphasis on our new ducks, I haven’t mentioned the garden, but it’s growing great, for the most part.  This week we’ve been enjoying PEAS.  We have Snow Peas, Sugar Snap Peas, and Shelling Peas.  I made a nice stirfry with the snow peas last week, and enjoy

Hornworms

Hornworms I found a hornworm looking thing wandering across the concrete, and thought, “Oh, no!”  I looked around on the tomato plants and didn’t see more worms or any obvious damage, so I was puzzled.  I expected to find some tomato plants defoliated near the top with just stems and
