"GOLDEN GAITS GARDEN"

WELLINGTON, COLORADO

We began our garden and duck-raising experiences at our first home together in Wellington, CO. We were married in 2008 and the garden began in 2009. Our first ducks arrived in 2011.

At that time our garden and duck experiences were outlined in our blogspot blog, Golden Gaits Garden. That blog has been discontinued and the posts regarding the garden are now archived here. The information regarding ducks can be accessed in our Ducks pages.

Note: Some (or all?) photos may be missing, or photo placement may be strange due to the import process. I’m working on that.

Micro Blocks

Yesterday I made my first batch of “micro blocks” for germination. I’m starting some lettuce, spinach, kale, leeks & scallions to go into my cold frame early, before the last frost date. I’ll probably plant them in early to mid-April. I’m also giving some onions a good start before planting

Transplanting MICROS to 2″ MINI Blocks

Some of the things that sprouted in the MICRO blocks are ready to go into MINI blocks. I’ve made my first batch of 2″ MINI blocks with the 3/4″ pin to make a hole big enough for the MICRO blocks to be inserted. I was frustrated and concerned that the

Seeds

I finally finished buying/ordering my seeds! I really get myself into a tizzy trying to decide what varieties to get, particularly when it comes to tomatoes and peppers. I go back and forth from one website to another, trying to choose which one has the most varieties I want. I

Garden Work Area

I thought I’d show some pictures of my garden working area. First is indoors where I have my grow lights. So far I’m only using the one light. The seedlings are on a rolling cart, and the seedlings can be raised or lowered according to how much space they need

Garden Plan 2011

Here is our current plan for 2011.  There still may be revisions, but for now I’m sticking with this plan.  We will be removing the bed that had previously been in the upper left (NW) corner, and will create the new long bed, going N-S to the right of the

Wind Damage

On Wednesday night it was quite windy!  Apparently there were gusts to 50 mph.  Throughout the night we heard things going bump and ca-clunk, wondering what was loose.  Thursday morning Tim looked out to see that our cold frame had “flown the coop” (or at least off the bed) and

First Cold Frame Planting

I planted lettuces and some cilantro into the cold frame and it looks like this.  The lettuces were sown in the house 4 weeks ago.  The spinach has been in the cold frame since November.  The other lettuces planted in November didn’t survive the cold.  Now I know.

Cold Frame Construction

Thanks for the question about construction.  It’s good to know someone is reading this!  We (or rather, Tim) built a new cold frame top, to be added to the other one, expanding the size.  All of these frames are made to fit our framed beds, which are the same width,

Cold Frame Planted!

I’ve filled the second section of the cold frame with more lettuces, spinach, kale, kohlrabi, leeks and scallions.  Now it looks like this.  I may have gone a bit overboard with the salad greens.  I’ll have to pick them young, rather than wait until they are big, and then eat

W-I-N-D: Wind, Wind, Wind

This time of year I grow tired of the wind!  It blows and blows.  You’d think it would just give up after a time, but when it does, it just starts up again.  It’s hard to be outside in the wind, even if it is not particularly cold.  Now that
